REVISED 3/14 after further study and consultation:
#1 - SNELL 95 helmets are still allowed. The "2007" rule was a new NHRA rule that was posted in 2006 when the track spent one year under NHRA sanction. I think they have since pulled back on that. IHRA (the current sanction) allows SNELL 95. As a practical matter, you'd have to have one, probably can't buy one. It would have been on helmets made starting in 1995 until the next spec was issued (think 1998). So a SNELL 95 is an old helmet. Any of the M rated helmets you find at a cycle shop will work, though most are just DOT (which is not Snell). The tech page is updated - forgot we had that warning on there. So the rule is Snell 95 or newer, or SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, 41.2A
31.1A - SNELL SA open face
31.2A - SNELL SA full-face face
41.1A - SNELL M open face
41.2A - SNELL M full-face face
#2 - The rule book is not clear this year. Under the ET section, 7.50-9.00 1/8 mile the rule says "SN90 or newer mandatory". Also says that in the 9.00 and slower section. Problem: SN-90 hasn't been allowed in a long time. In the General Regulations, it says "Drivers of Sportsman classes and ET cars - 13.99 (8.59 1/8 mile) must use a helmet meeting Snell 95 or newer."
Found the update at IHRA
"p. 101 Helmet; Change the first sentence of the third paragraph to read as follows: Entries running 11.49 to quicker a minimum of a SN 95 or newer is mandatory. Entries running 11.50 and slower a minimum of a SN-90 is mandatory."
11.49 will be 7.49 1/8 mile.
REVISION TO THE POST - I overlooked the little "See Class Requirements" qualifier. 9.00 and slower section say helmet required if running 8.59 and faster. 8.60 and slower - helmet recommended.
IIRC - The difference the Snell SN and M designations is that the SN is fireproof.
Helmet is always a good idea anyway. Chicks dig it.
Now I have to go change all the banners on the site. Gaak X2
The real deal seems to be 8.59 and faster still, despite the reading of the line in the Gen. Regs. I'll confirm that next week sometime to be sure.
I'm just trying to help, don't want to see anybody come out and get turned away for no good reason. We like the street deal and the Sunday move should help. More cars hanging out, the better. Got a couple of carbs that need a thorough thrashing and a warm Sunday afternoon sounds like a perfect time for a bunch of 60' tests.
